Journey into the World of Antiques with Babaart Antique: Collecting Tips from Mr. Emre

The world of antiques is like a treasure that carries the traces of the past to the present. Each piece reflects a historical event or period. Mr. Emre, the founder of Babaart Antique, who has gained extensive experience in this field over the years, shared his views and experiences about antique collecting with us. In this interview with Mr. Emre, we talked about many topics, from how his passion for antiques began to the intricacies of determining the value of an antique.

How did your passion for antiques start, and how long have you been involved in this field? Can you tell us your story?

Mr. Emre: The passion for antiques is something that comes from childhood. It’s a matter we've been interested in since we were children. I had a specific interest group: pocket watches. I started by collecting pocket watches. However, as my collection grew, it became increasingly complex. This is how I found myself in the world of antiques and eventually founded Babaart Antique.

Everyone has a category of items they are passionate about. Which antique items are you most interested in?

Mr. Emre: My collection includes liturgical items and more figurative Ottoman pieces. I like pieces that have figures on them, depicting something or informing about a group. For example, I am interested in pieces that reflect a Janissary community or Bektashi culture. They could be of different types, such as silver or paintings. These types of pieces are very special to me because they carry both aesthetic and historical value.

What criteria do you use to determine the value of an antique?

Mr. Emre: When evaluating antiques, it is crucial to differentiate between the old and the antique. I separate Ottoman artifacts from European ones; Ottoman artifacts are evaluated separately from European ones. When determining value, I consider the item's condition, ephemeral value, and history. For me, these criteria are sufficient for a piece to be considered antique and gain value.

What advice would you give to beginners in antique collecting?

Mr. Emre: The most important advice I can give to beginners is to stay away from new items sold under the name "Antique Auction." Although these auctions are called Antique Auctions, they have nothing to do with antiques. They should choose quality pieces with real ephemeral value that tell a story. For example, pieces such as Chinese porcelain or Ottoman silver, which signify a specific historical period, are always valuable. I recommend choosing pieces that have a master or artist; the rest are worthless.

What is the rarest or most unusual piece you've come across so far?

Mr. Emre: The most exceptional piece I've come across so far was a painting by Hoca Ali Rıza. Interestingly, I was able to purchase this painting from a social media platform like Facebook. The fact that the seller did not know the painting's value was a great opportunity for me. This shows that there can always be unexpected discoveries in the world of antiques.
